With Muscle
Drum Music, Ashley Davies comes to the fore as one of this country's great
drummer-songwriters. A thrilling rhythmic adventure, Muscle Drum Music was
recorded almost entirely by Davies on guitar, harmonica, vocals and two
drum kits, with no loops or samples. A true solo record, written from the
drums up and built on its own driving grooves, Muscle Drum Music is a
recording that's every bit as much fun to listen to as it was for Davies
to record.
Muscle Drum Music shows off Davies' virtuosity across a gamut of
drumming styles, from the Latin American accents of Latino to the
glammed-up bellbottom jazz rhythms of Grab Your Kittens and Dance
to the infectious chugging, foot-stomping grooves of Love That Stomp.
The album also reveals Davies as a fierce harmonica player and a rhythm
guitarist to be reckoned with.
"I love the rhythm smiths," Davies says of his guitar heroes, "Keith
Richards, John Lee Hooker and most of all, Malcolm Young. I love AC/DC,
and I dig Malcolm just as much as Angus!"
Muscle Drum Music reveals Davies as a many-faceted musician, but
this multi-dimensioned album is only one expression of his ever-evolving
musical life. "This is not the whole me," Davies points out. "It's just
part of what I do."
