PRESS RELEASE

After touring just about every corner of Australia with his band, The Necessary Few and performing solo shows in the U.S. with fellow riff-vendor Judah Bauer’s band 20 Miles, Matt released a single titled RIGHT FROM WRONG.

The track Right From Wrong is taken from the album NAVIGATIONAL SKILLS. The single also includes two tracks that will unavailable anywhere else - African Message and Vacancy (live version).

The Necessary Few are Grant Cummerford on bass, Roger Bergodaz on drums and Matt on guitars, lap steels, organs, harmonicas, banjo and vocals. Simon Burke is the unofficial fourth member of the group and he plays some most excellent Hammond organ, Wurlitzer and grand piano on many of the tracks.

As people who have followed Matt’s music will know, he enjoys collaborating with other musicians and he continues to do so on this new recording. Don’t be surprised if you hear Mick Harvey playing avant-garde drums on the poignant Every One Was Born to Love or playing vibes on other tracks including Right From Wrong. (Matt returned the favour by contributing to Mick’s  terrific sound track to the acclaimed new film – Australian Rules.) Dave Graney and Clare Moore dropped into Matt’s 8-Track Shack to help out on the Graney/Walker penned tune, Just Add Wine and Matt’s long time friend Broderick Smith also makes an appearance on the co-written, Boy Under a Bridge inspired by the documentary, Kurt and Courtney. Another friend Suzannah Espie, from alt country group GIT, also contributes vocals on two songs including the single track Right From Wrong. And Ross McLennan’s string arrangement on Into the Light adds another dimension to the greatest song Renee Geyer never sang.

NAVIGATIONAL SKILLS may well be just the thing for those in need of a little soul nourishment. Dig in.

‘…Walker's approach is reckless, immediate, and starkly beautiful’.

Andy Ellis in Guitar Player (US)

Beat Magazine
Single o’ the week - ‘Right From Wrong’

With a voice that’s evolving into something as show stopping as a Van Morrison / Jacob Dylan hybrid, Matt Walker sings about meeting a new love, stargazing, learning a few life lessons and wonderfully watching ‘music falling from the clouds’. That his musical backing sounds like the beginning of one of those dreams where you don’t know whether things will turn out heart-warming or horrifying only increases the chills as you hang on his every word as this tale plays out. Yes, it’s music the word ‘evocative’ was made for.

Single of the week - ‘Right From Wrong’

Hey, just like the night Matt Walker sings about here, you don’t stumble across something this poignant and pretty too often. And when you do you’re a fool if you don’t stop everything and let it sink in, let it become a permanent memory, a contribution to the significant experiences that make you who you are. With the help of Git’s Suzannah Espie on backing vocals, Walkers earnest singing voice transports you to an evening of drinking and contemplation under the stars with his rich guitar tones and Mick Harvey’s vibes playing acting as the arm of the summer wind around your shoulders.
